Fitness pre-requisites and pace group guidance: Easy (approx 2 hours-2 hour 30 min half marathon) Medium (Sub 2 hour half marathon), Hard (sub 1 hour 40 min half marathon)

Trail Difficulty:  The Full course summary: This trail contains short sections of average technical difficulty switchbacks and continuing challenging hiking climbs, with an above average elevation profile, and a longer than average distance. There are large amounts of runnable sections which will require endurance. We class this tour a 3 out 5 degree of difficulty.

Come with us on a Gippsland group trail running adventure through the Walhalla Historic Area, as we ascend out of Walhalla along the Australian Alps Walking Track  towards Thomson river, there are extensive views across the valley over the Thomson-Walhalla Historic Railway. We follow the, between the carved, steep forested slopes, before crossing the river at the old Steel footbridge and heading back to town. Our run take us through the historic mining and logging areas on stunning, green immersive single trail, 4wd and access tracks, river and creek crossings, steep climbs, switch backs and river lookouts.

Our Walhalla Tour is a 34km, 1300m elevation circuit run or a 21km short course option. With breaks the full run should take approximately 5-5 1/2 hrs to complete.

Starting and finishing in the Walhalla township, Our tour takes in:

  • Thomson Historic Rail Station
  • Australian Alps Walking Track
  • Thomson River
  • Steel Bridge
  • Poverty Point
  • Cricket Ground Track
  • Walhalla Cricket Ground
  • Mormontown Track climb

We have something for everyone on this run which will be lead by our experienced trail running, fun loving tour guides, who lead a variety of ability pace groups.


Our bus will stop for coffee and food enroute and post run we will grab some local food and drink, before returning to Melbourne.

What to bring-

    • A minimum of 2 litres of water to carry (aid station with water refills at 21km)
    • Good condition trail shoes for muddy, wet trails and loose rock trails.
    • Suitable running sports wear to suit the weather
    • Enough snacks/food to last you your time out on course
    • Any emergency medications you may need

For those purchasing a Trail bus ticket. The bus will leave 5:30am from the main entrance to the NGV on St Kilda Rd.  Please make sure you add the bus transfer product to your cart.


Please note: The return to city transfer will not leave until all runners have returned from all distances. Once picking up our short course runners and dropping those back to their vehicles in our start/finish point. Our short course runners are welcome to remain with the bus or explore the beautiful town of Walhalla. There are regular gold mine tours and the Wally Pub and cafe serve up some local dishes.

We strongly recommend having air ambulance cover for this run and all trail runs, due to costs and difficulty for access in these remote terrains.
